What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

When the nerve tissue gets damaged within the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) it is called Peripheral Neuropathy (PN). Symptoms of PN can vary depending on their location in the body and can be sorted into three main types of symptoms. You can have motor nerve symptoms, sensory nerve symptoms, and autonomic nerve symptoms. Motor nerve symptoms can include issues such as muscle weakness, cramping, twitching, and even muscle shrinking. When it comes to sensory nerve symptoms you could experience loss of feeling and have difficulty with certain movements such as walking with your eyes closed. You could also experience heightened pain intensity even with light touch. Autonomic nerve symptoms could include difficulty controlling your bladder, regulating your blood pressure, and not being able to control how much you are sweating.

Causes and Conventional Treatments of PN

There are multiple causes for PN. You could be experiencing PN due to physical trauma, diabetes, vascular damage, infections, autoimmune disease, nutritional imbalance/deficiency, hormone imbalance, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or an infection. In the past people suffering with PN have not had many options for treatment. There are some medications that have been prescribed to patients in the past,  including anti-depressants that have also been shown to affect how your brain perceives the pain from PN, and opioids. Due to the current opioid crisis many do not see a prescriptions for opioids as a viable option. In some cases if medicine does not work there are some surgeries that would be recommended as well. The problem with all of these treatments is that they are treating the symptoms of PN and not the cause of PN. None of these treatments will repair the damage done to the nerves that caused the PN in the first place.
